Guitar Basics For Beginners Here is Where You Start Learning   by Larry Chee

The guitar is a popular musical instrument which many people are keen to master. In fact, on the internet, there are a lot of information about guitar basics provided for people to learn guitar at a beginner level. Here I share with you a few brief guitar basic steps to learning guitar.

The first step is to understand your guitar anatomy. That is a very vital part of learning guitar basics. You will see many different types of guitars, such as acoustic, electric, classical, etc, in the market. However, they all have many things in common. At the top of the guitar is the headstock. On the headstock are the tuners. You will use these tuners to adjust the pitch of each of the strings on the guitar.

Then there is the neck, where you create different notes by placing your fingers at various position. The neck joins the headstock to the body of the guitar. On the neck, there are metal strips, which are called frets. The strings run from the headstock across these frets and are anchored to the bridge at the guitar body. Your next guitar basic lesson is about the strings.

A standard guitar consists of six strings. Each string has a different size and note value. The way the six strings are arranged is as shown below. Now, do not be confused over the strings. If not, go back and learn your ABC of guitar basics again. Nay, just kidding.

Thickest – 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 • Thinnest
Thickest • E, A, D, G, B, E • Thinnest

The sixth string, which is the E note, gives the lowest sound. Incidentally, the first string, which is also the E notes, gives the highest sound. Actually, both strings produce the same note, but in different pitch.

After that, you will have to tune your guitar. Yes! That is right. Tuning is another guitar basic which you must know. Tuning is a process whereby you will be adjusting the pitch of each string so that it plays the correct note. However, tuning a guitar sounds like a difficult task to a beginner. Not to worry. There are electronic tuners available in the market to help you to perform the tuning part. You can go to any music shop and ask the assistant to help you on selecting the electronic tuners. You would not need your guitar basic skills here, in this case. These objects will pick up the sound of a string and let you know, through a LED display, whether the note you are playing is sharp or flat.

Now, another guitar basic knowledge, you should learn the proper method to hold the guitar. The back of the guitar should comes in contact with your body. You will hold the neck with your left hand. Your thumb should rest behind the neck of the guitar. The rest of your fingers will be slightly curled and positioned above the strings. The guitar body will sit on your right leg.

Next, you will need to get your own guitar pick. This pick is used to strum or pick the guitar strings. You will hold the pick with your thumb and index finger, while the rest of the fingers close up like a fist. When you strum the strings, only use your wrist, instead of your arm. This will take some time to train, however, it is an important guitar basic skill. So by all means, spend more effort on practicing how to use the pick.

Finally, you should start to learn some guitar chords and play some notes. There are a lot of resources on the internet that touch on chords, scales and other guitar knowledges. Go ahead and seek them out! Learning guitar basics for beginners has never been that easier.
